After triaging the caller, the nurses can connect callers to clinics in Longmont, arrange transportation to and from appointments and notify a clinic when a patient is arriving. Nurse Navigators can also connect callers directly to telehealth physicians who can provide care and prescribe medication if necessary. The service does not require the caller to have medical insurance to access this service, the news release states.
The Longmont Department of Public Safety has been working in conjunction with GMR (Global Medical Response, parent of American Medical Response) since early 2022 to get the nurse navigation line set up and operational for the City of Longmont, he said
This decision comes a week after nurses at Longmont United held a speak-out event on Dec. 2 to alert the community about the alarming conditions at the hospital, including the turnover of roughly a third of the nursing staff since July. Nurses say it is in the best interest of the RNs, patients, the Longmont community, and the hospital to listen to the nurses and ensure they have the necessary resources to do their jobs.
A group of Colorado nurses got the green light to begin bargaining with their employer, Longmont United Hospital. The National Labor Relations Board certified the group's union election results on Monday.
The National Labor Relations Board did its initial count of the 187 ballots March 25. By a one-vote margin, the group voted 94-93 to unionize. The tally and certification of the results makes the Longmont union the first private-sector hospital in the United States affiliated with the National Nurses United Union, which represents roughly 175,000 registered nurses.
Their election victory comes on the heels of increased union activity among health care workers in the state. In December, Kaiser Permanente nurses finalized a new contract with the nonprofit health care system after threatening to strike over pandemic working conditions.
